Self-Harm Self-harm refers to individuals who engage in behaviors which cause physical harm to themselves. This self-injurious behavior may be done through cutting, burning, biting, or other ways of causing physical pain to oneself. There are a variety of reasons why people may engage in this type of behavior. Some of these reasons include feeling overwhelmed, feeling angry, having poor coping skills, feeling disconnected from ones body, or experiencing memories of abuse or trauma. Typically these behaviors do not indicate that a person is trying to end their life, but serious injury can occur at times.
